Interested in a more personal glimpse into the
Friendly Foot Care team?

Please find below a brief bio on each of us.

Michael S. Nirenberg, DPM – Dr. Nirenberg founded Friendly Foot Care in 1992 in a small two-room office and now is proud to offer patients the highest level of professional care in a custom-designed 4000 square foot state-of-the-art facility.

He is not only a podiatric physician and surgeon, but also an educator, writer, researcher, and one of a handful of forensic podiatrists in the world. His long career of dedicated public service in the Chicago area has seen him assist law enforcement in criminal investigations which involved foot-related evidence at crime scenes. He has had the honor and privilege to treat many thousands of patients, including area doctors, nurses and their families, and has been featured on a wide variety of national media.

Some of Dr. Nirenberg’s major interviews and features include:

  • Magazines:  First for Women Magazine; Martha Stewart’s Whole Living; NWI Parent; Get Healthy; and Vim & Vigor.
  • Newspapers: Wall Street Journal; Post-Tribune; Indianapolis Recorder; and NWI Times.
  • Television Networks: PBS; History Channel; and Fox News.

Dr. Nirenberg's paper “Forensic Methods and the Podiatric Physician,” published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, earned him the prestigious Distinguished Podiatric Writing Award while he was still a medical student. He was the first podiatry student to have a paper published in the journal without a co-author.

His professional articles have been published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association; the Journal of Foot Surgery; Northwest Indiana’s Parent Magazine; Get Healthy Magazine; the Fixing Your Feet E-zine; the Journal of Forensic Identification; and The Barefoot Running Book.

The History Channel’s MonsterQuest asked Dr. Nirenberg to examine footprints that may belong to the mysterious creature known as “Big Foot" in a remote area of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The episode segment may be viewed here.

Dr. Nirenberg is a Student Mentor for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), and is active in a considerable number of academic and outreach programs. He has lectured to:

  • Podiatric physicians at the Midwest Podiatry Conference in Chicago and the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association Conference in Indianapolis.
  • Forensic scientists at the International Association for Identification's Annual Meeting in Louisville, KY and to their Indiana chapter at their annual meeting in Evansville.
  • Students on podiatric medicine at Indiana University Northwest and Valparaiso University.
  • The public on diabetic foot problems on behalf of Methodist Hospital.
  • Local law enforcement officials and a division of Homeland Security.

Dr. Nirenberg has also spoken at Chicagoland events organized by St. Mary Medical Center, the Kiwanis, the Y-Me Cancer Support Group, and the Chicago Arthritis Foundation. He is a regular lecturer to salon and pedicure students on how they can spot foot and ankle problems on their clients.

Dr. Nirenberg’s caring approach to assisting patients is to treat each of them as a member of his own family. “I take a very thorough approach to each patient’s foot or ankle problem,” Dr. Nirenberg says. In fact, in one case, he was so thorough he discovered a young man’s foot pain was due to a tumor in his neck! The case was published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and he was featured on the front page of the region’s largest paper as seen here.

Dr. Nirenberg studied podiatric medicine in Chicago and completed a residency in foot and ankle surgery. He is Board Certified in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, and holds both a Bachelors of Science and a Bachelors of Arts degree. For 15 years he served as a Podiatric Residency Instructor, teaching new podiatrists the art and science of treating their patients.

He is not only a member of the APMA, but also of the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association, and the American College of Forensic Examiners. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Forensic Podiatry, and on the APMA’s Podiatric Seals Committee that determines which foot products would earn the coveted Podiatric Seal of Approval.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Dr. Nirenberg married Miriam in 1992 and is a father of two wonderful boys. In his free time he writes employee bios.

Michael G. Lacey, DPM – shown here with the love of his life, Wendy. Born and raised in Boston, he completed an intense three-year podiatric surgery residency in what Bostonians consider their most hated city: New York. There, he trained in advanced techniques of diagnosing and treating foot and ankle problems and learning how to tolerate the words, "Go Yankees."

Dr. Lacey joined Friendly Foot Care in 2008 and we love having him! Strongly dedicated to helping patients, he knew he had to be a podiatrist the day his father, a diabetic, got a serious infection in his big toe and a podiatrist did surgery that saved him from having the leg amputated.

Dr. Lacey loves solving foot and ankle problems, and he is passionate about staying on the leading edge of research and development of new procedures. He has had extensive training in diabetic foot care, arthritis, foot and ankle surgery, treating bunions, hammertoes, and sprains, strains and fractures of the foot and ankle.

Krystal– medical assistant and orders our medical supplies. Krystal makes sure we never run out of Band-Aids - or candy! She always has a smile on her face, and when not helping the doctors takes care of her young daughter and spends time with her friends. She is a big help and we often wish we had another employee like her. Interestingly, she does have a twin sister, but she's happily employed elsewhere. So until they can clone people, we'll just have to make do with one Krystal.

Diana– the “point person” for the insurance department, Diana relentlessly pursues elusive insurance companies. When not in office calling, faxing or e-mailing insurance companies, she enjoys the tranquility of hiking, camping or relaxing by the lake, or the hustle of spending time with her two children and six grandchildren.

(Diana is pictured in red with her family)

Yolanda – administrative assistant and insurance liaison, Yolanda exudes positive energy and always has a big smile on her face. She enjoys helping patients solve their insurance problems and makes sure the staff and bills get paid. With an aptitude for being creative, we count on her to dress-up the office’s signs and forms. When not in the office, she spends time with her best friend and her godson, and loves watching sports, especially basketball - and she still can’t believe the doctors turned down courtside seats for the Chicago Bulls.

Kenya – medical assistant, and always pleasant and helpful with the patients. Kenya recently passed her podiatric x-ray certification exam and we are super-proud of her! She is smart, a hard worker and always willing to pitch in where needed. When not assisting the doctors or helping patients, she enjoys spending time with her friends.

Jennifer – community outreach director and administrative assistant, joined us in January of 2010 and quickly became a friendly, valuable, hard-working member of the Friendly Foot Care team. When not helping at the front desk and greeting patients - always with a smile - she works to spread the good word about Friendly Foot Care to Northwest Indiana and even further. After running around all day in the office, she clocks in at her other job: mom to three boys who she describes as "crazy" (aren't all boys crazy?). We are glad Jennifer joined us and hope she stays (and keeps running!) for many more years.

Barb – our insurance department's "Girl Friday" and right hand assistant to Diana. With an ever-ready smile to brighten your day, Barb is always ready to help out. She brings a ray of sunshine to the sometimes difficult task of dealing with insurance companies and addressing patients' insurance concerns. When insurance companies and patients are not keeping her busy, her two teenage daughters do their part to keep her running! (Having met these two bright, active young women, I just hope they don't run her into the ground!)

Tracy –With her super-pleasant smile and demeanor, Tracy is the newest member of our team and we are happy to have her! She is a dynamo at assisting patients with their appointments and other issues, and helping to keep the front desk working smoothly and efficiently. In addition to working with us, she is also studying to earn a Bachelor's degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. Tracy also enjoys caring for her pure bred Bichon Frise, relaxing with friends and her husband, and connecting with nature - though, between her Friendly Foot Care work and her endless university assignments, we have no idea how she finds the time!
